Zoom IQ6

zoom iq6Everybody’s got an idea of what makes (for them) the perfect recording solution for “on the road”.  Funny, it’s that way for home studios too!

In either case, you’ve got to find what works for you and go for it.

What works for me when I’m away from my home studio is the Zoom H6n.  I love it’s robust portability, the pre-amps (new and improved), it’s ease of use, and the fact that I can use it independently with built-in mics, or as a pre-amp for an XLR mic.  See my thorough review of the H6n here.

But more and more I’m hearing that voice talent are sending auditions, landing jobs, and even recording paid jobs on their smartphone or tablet.zoom iQ6_2

For that, there’s a new player on the street, and it’s also made by Zoom.  The IQ6.

This XY stereo mic plug-in for iOS devices is nearly the same as one of the mics you can plug in to the H6n. (see here).

The IQ6 comes with the lightning connector, and a dedicated headphone jack.  It features two quality unidirectional condenser microphones with adjustable angle to 90 or 120 deegrees.  It comes with it’s own app, but maybe the handiest feature of the IQ6 is the large manual gain wheel and three-segment level LED indicators.

I have not had a chance to try out the Zoom IQ6, but I can vouch for the quality of Zoom products, and if you’re looking for a solution such as this to use with your iPhone, I’d say the $99 suggested retail is probably right in the ballpark.  (write-up on the IQ6 on BSWUSA)

If you have the IQ6, please let us know in the comments below what your impressions are.
