Those of you who can blow-off social media as irrelevant, or unnecessary to your VO marketing?  I salute you.

That has not been my experience.

Entire subcultures (or with Facebook: Demi-cultures) surround each platform. Twitter is by far the most frustrating to most voice actors (unofficial poll)…but FaceBook is for people today like TV was a generation ago.  Miss it, and you miss some of the foundational changes going on in the world today.  As Marshall McCluhan famously said:  “the medium IS the message”, and despite all contentions that FB is not a media company, Zuckerberg has perhaps built the biggest media juggernaut of all time.

Still stinging from the 2016 blame it absorbed for “fake news” and Russian manipulation of its algorithms, FB is taking a new turn, and it might affect any small business who uses the platform to purchase ads.

The social media giant is now transforming the way the newsfeed is composed to focus more on “meaningful” interactions.  The loose interpretation of that – as most pundits agree, now – is that FB will place in your feed more personal notes from your network, and will decrease the emphasis on content from marketers, companies, and ostensibly “fake news” sources.

Will this hurt their profits?  Probably.
Will this boost public confidence?  Maybe
Will this stop “fake news”?  TBD

LinkedIn, too, – in it’s own stodgy way – is making some changes.  IN fact, since being acquired by Microsoft, the steady stream of make-overs is keeping LI-watchers plenty busy.

This time, they’re announcing some major changes in their system of GROUPS.  This is huge, ’cause LI groups are where stuff can happen for individuals hoping to gain acceptance, trust and prospects.

This is not the first time — by far — that LinkedIn has tinkered with the configuration of its groups…but as the title to this blog states:  change MUST happen for these social networks to stay relevant.

This time the online career/job platform is claiming that it will put groups back at the core of the LI experience, but it’s going to mean the end of an iOS GROUPS app. That’s too bad.  It was one of the better Social Media apps out there in my estimation.

Below is the official notice I got as the administrator for a couple of LI groups.  Now you know too!

These “adjustments” will inevitably force many of us to approach these networks in a new way.  In case you haven’t noticed, WE all have to be change agents too.  If you stop being agile in this fast-paced market, you wlll lost ground.  Guaranteed.

[except for all of you who find social media irrelevant or unnecessary to your VO marketing]

Dave,

We’re currently working on making some changes to the LinkedIn Groups experience, and because you are a valued group admin, we wanted to give you some advance details on what’s coming. Groups is at the heart of what makes LinkedIn a trusted place for professionals to help and support one another, and the changes we’re planning will make Groups a bigger part of the main LinkedIn experience.

Our focus on re-integrating Groups back into the core LinkedIn experience means that we will no longer be able to support a standalone iOS app for Groups; that app will stop working as of February 15, 2018. But please know that your existing group memberships and contributions will not be affected as part of that change.

As a preview, here are some of the improvements you can look forward to when we roll them out to the main LinkedIn Groups web and mobile experiences:

Discover and access Groups more easily. You’ll be able to access your Groups right from the homepage, and you’ll see the latest content from your Groups in notifications and the homepage feed.

Be a part of richer conversations. You’ll be able to post videos into your groups, @mention the members you want to weigh in, and keep the conversation going by replying to comments.

Ultimately, our goal is to create an even better Groups experience within the primary LinkedIn applications, so we are putting our focus there over the coming weeks and months. We’ll be sending you updates as these improvements and many others become available. Stay tuned!

Sincerely,
The LinkedIn Team
